January 4, 2025 – The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently announced plans to redevelop the historic Mahalaxmi Racecourse, aiming to transform it into a dynamic public space. This ambitious initiative includes the creation of a theme park and the improvement of sports facilities, significantly enhancing the recreational landscape of Mumbai.

Meckavo Sports, a premier turf construction company in Mumbai, welcomes this exciting development, noting the increased opportunities for sports like box cricket and the growth of public spaces in the city. The redevelopment will focus on reclaiming approximately 120 acres of the 211-acre racecourse, with plans to develop a 73-acre theme park and a 30-acre area linking the site to the nearby coastal road garden.

The proposal is part of the city’s larger vision to expand public recreation areas. As per the plan, the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) will see its lease extended until 2053, with new stables set to be built to support horse racing activities. A large majority of RWITC members have voted in favor of the proposal, which is expected to provide Mumbai’s residents with modern sports infrastructure, enhanced public amenities, and more community-oriented spaces.
